Every so often this happens to me. I see a coin I am interesting in bidding for: But I decide to ask a question about the item first: This is the important step: I click "Continue" - and this is what happens next: Why is he 'not able to respond to my question'? Is he at an important meeting with the president, perhaps? Or taking part in a manned expedition to Mars? Does anyone know what's going on here? Edited by jimjamtwo 02/18/2015 11:53 pm

One thing is for sure: That coin has been polished to heck and back. No question about it.

I'm sure you're right - the possibility hadn't crossed my mind because I was so preoccupied by the question of why communications with this seller appear to be blocked.
Looks like we share an interest in King George V era coinage - I usually only buy copper, but I was tempted for a moment to dabble in silver.

If the Seller does not ship Internationally, and has his shipping preferences set accordingly, then most likely, you cannot ask him questions. ebay automatically blocks them. I used to ship internationally and got all kinds of questions. I had several pkgs mysteriously not get delivered, delayed or lost and got tired of doing refunds. Changed my preferences to domestic only about 5 years ago and no more questions have been received from international Buyers. That's my guess.

I considered this possibility, but the listing gives a price for international postage and it states that he ships worldwide. Clearly, that's not the problem.

I believe westernsky is right. I often try to message sellers from the US who don't ship internationally and get snubbed. So I opt to picking the "this is not about an item" option which allows me to contact them anyway and then ask them whether they are willing to ship internationally.

His listing can say anything he wants about International shipping and charges but unless he has his SHIPPING PREFERENCES set correctly then no one outside his "ship to" countries can contact him.

You know, that might well make sense, because some sellers may not notice when certain settings change. There can be glitches in the ebay software which cause settings to alter sometimes without the seller being aware of it.

I've corresponded with a couple of high volume ebay sellers and the # of questions (both realistic and silly) is so high that they simply couldn't keep up. One in particular I recall had to decide between running his ebay business or the B&M, because the questions were a full time + job (on top of the listing activities).

But when I am blocked from contacting an ebay seller, I am also blocked from buying from them. I get message that states - falsely - that I do not have a Paypal account or that it is not connected to my ebay account (see screensnap below). I have, in fact, bought many items on ebay using my Paypal account without problems. Thus ebay is blocking legitimate transactions on its own website!

UPDATE: I've been advised that the source of the problem may be the seller's Paypal, not ebay, settings. Quote: 'for this seller to be able to sell to you, you'll need to tell him to go into his RISK CONTROLS / COUNTRIES MONITORED in his Paypal account, and tell him to move NSW from the right column to the left column.' If NSW is listed by Paypal as a country - it is, of course, not a country but part of Australia - then problems are bound to arise.
