I have it at AU64. Only the scratch on the beard - only prominent due to photography - detracts. Otherwise it's simply beautiful, and I didn't even notice the ding at first. The rest of the coin was that distracting. Not hard to believe it was the cutest puppy in the litter.

That's a really nice looking coin and a great gesture, I would be tickled pink if my son bought me something like that.

Beautiful coin! Me, I wouldn't care about the ding if it were mine. The rest of it is so nice that it outweighs that flub. And of course in this case it's the thought that counts.
Although I enjoy getting rare coins that could potentially have a nice value, as soon as they're mine, I forget all about selling them. They'll stay with me forever.

Just to be clear... I love the sentiment, the deed, and the coin itself (it's gorgeous; what ding?!). Bravo! Your father is a lucky man.

Nice. Does he know it is coming? Think he will contact you and say something like "You really shouldn't have". People always say that and seldom mean it. Bet he will be realllllly happy. Don't know why some have to look for the bad in things. Why not just be happy with everything?

What a great thing to do for your Dad. The ding will be hardly noticed in real life. Some coins will have a sentimental meaning more than the coin itself. When I was 10 and my sister was 12 off her own back she bought me a GVF 1914 1/-.

Wonderful! If he doesn't know it's coming already, I hope he doesn't have any heart conditions. Opening a box addressed to me & discovering an S-VDB inside would be enough to send even a young collector to the hospital!

Even with the ding that is still a very nice coin with nice uniform chocolate brown. Just the type of color I would want to put in a set an XF or AU generally is the best grade for most people to buy for this coin. As most people then to assemble an XF-BU or AU-BU set of Linoclns. Your father is in for a very nice surprise!

Great story and you get a big pat on the back. I hope to do the same thing someday. I have a US cent collection that was passed down to me. In the spot where the 1909SVDB goes there is a blue blank cardbard circle that says RARE on it....one time I took the cardboard circle out of the album and my dad had written on the bottom of the circle..."You mean you got it!" I really hope I can afford to buy him one in the near future.

The ding just gives it more character to the fact that the person who sent it off for grading, didn't get a kick in the butt from PCGS and have it marked AU53 Details "Rim Ding" or something along that line.
