I wonder what grade this old dime might receive? Can anyone tell me more about it. It seems to be a key date for the series. It was dug up using a metal detector about twenty years ago. Would you send it to a TPG?

Well in G4 it's worth over 3G. Sending it in is really up to you. http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/#/Draped10LE/Grades I am not good at grading VF30?

I'd send it in without hesitation if it were up to me. But it looks to have some old cleaning, and it retoned because of it. I don't see anything telling me that this isn't authentic. Good luck on your endeavors!

I'd say definitely send it to a TPG. It appears to be at least a high VF. Doesn't look bad for being a metal detector coin.

Old cleaning for sure, but PCGS is very lenient with federal coinage, could very well grade problem free. I think it's XF-40 obverse, VF-30 reverse, overall VF-35.
However, what concerns me is the are right around the top right clouds which seems to correspond with the same area on the obverse, I've seen this sort of unevenness with damaged and even plugged coins although there's a low chance with yours (maybe the picture is just warped?). Also what's going on with the rim at 7:00 on the obverse?

I'd get it slabbed and I generally hate slabs but it needs to be authenticated by a third party.

What's going on at 7:00 o'clock on the obverse rim area? Ex-jewelry? OP, can you post a pic of this area?

JR-1, the more "common" of the two varieties for the date to the extent that this major rarity could be called that. Between all grading services there may be 6 of this variety in slabs, at this grade or better. None are known in Mint State.

The weak upper right stars on the reverse are characteristic, but I wonder about 7:00 on the obverse as zxcccxz mentioned. Maybe a small ding. Undoubtedly a Details coin for the cleaning, but those details sure reach into the XF range to my eyes.

In a slab - where this one must be - you're going to need $5000+ just to get the seller's interest, and maybe double that.

XF Details. I have no doubt it's a genuine coin. Needs to be slabbed though for more return.

Amazing for a dug coin of that age.

I kinda saw that in other images of the variety but didn't see it discussed; if you're sure about it I am too.
