Is this another common thing on the penny, it seems an impression of the top of the head can be seen on the other side, and the neck and chest area of the kangaroo show through on the opposite side.

Impression

This is a 1943, maybe common to that year?

pretty common, it's what is called ghosting.
Yours looks like a pretty decent example.

It is quite common. I have "ghosting" on most of my pennies.
