OldWest, one thing to keep in mind is that most collectors are not in to it as much as those on this forum. I'm sure that the vast majority of people who get sets with debris inside the packaging or other flaws just look at the coins and put them away until next year. Then there are the picky retentive perfectionists like me. Proof sets are much more likely to have a problem simply because there are more coins and three holders.

I will agree with the proof set theory because of the multiple coins...BUT...I have had a standing order for 5 silver sets for many years and never have returned a set...

...and...this conversation is regarding a single coin not a set. If I order 5 gold dimes (I'm not) it will be because I WANT 5 gold dimes not one or two from the batch

I don't know how everyone feels but I think the mint should have done a .99 percent silver set of the 1916's. It would give collectors on a fixed budget an opportunity to collect something truly nice. I know I can't afford any of the gold, except "maybe" the 1/10 coin. However, I have other coins, yes multiple coins, that I can buy instead of the 1/10 gold coin.
When will the mint start listening to us, their customers?

I'm only doing this with the gold coins. Since my ordeal dealing with the Liberty Gold coin, I'm now less likely to trust the Mint's QC issues and have decided I'd rather order more than one and hope at least one is good, than have to deal with the hassle of returning and reordering if one is bad. I have not done this with any silver, but with 24k gold being what is is, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

If I'm paying a premium, I want a coin that justifies that premium.

This may be slightly off thread topic, but does anyone remember/know the original US Mint price for the 2008-W 1/10 oz Gold Buffalo?

OldWest
The 1/10th Gold Buffalo for 2008-w was $129.95 and gold was 947.60 an ounce, July 22, 2008.

Thanks for the numbers, One50.

I noticed the 2008 1/10 Buffalo's mintage was only 1,884. Compare that to the Mercury's mintage (limit) of 125,000. That's a considerable difference.

Just an FYI for those slab people out there. For NGC the gold dime will be submitted under the Modern tier which means that there is a minimum of 5 coins needed...

Just a heads up for those who plan to buy a couple and submit...

I was super excited about this series when it was announced last year but the markup really turned me off. I think it will have very little collecting value so I will pass. The mintage is too high IMO

I wonder if the demand will be similar to the Gold Kennedy? From the reading I've done, the hoopla and trading and selling surrounding the Gold Kennedy was like a roller coaster.
