You'd have to post a picture, seems like a misreading. There is a greek cryptographic mintmark of the word EROS (Amor in latin, Roma in reverse) that crops up on some 4th century issues.

I believe it's EXSC, but seeing the whole coin would confirm it.

It looks OK, but I can' find who issued it. The FX (EX) SC doesn't appear to be a persons name and ROMA is on so many of these coins.

Echizento, the seller says it is a rare Denarius from P. CORNELIUS LENTULUS. Hope that helps.

EX SC is the legend, not the mint mark. I forget what it means (SC being Senatoribus Consulto) but it appears later on the coinage of Vespasian.

Here you go: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...y=ex%20s%20c

Edit: Ben, for the Latin you are using 'senator' rather than 'senatus'. Senator is for individual members of the senate while senatus is the word for the senate as a whole.

Well I'm stumped I searched a large number of images but was not able to come up with the reverse. The obverse is Hercules similar to the one used on coins of P Cornelius Lentulus Marcellins circa 100 BC. But the reverse doesn't match his coins.

So did I echizento. I have a funny feeling about this coin, either it is ultra rare or it is a forgery. Just my two nummi.

Thanks, Guys. The work that you have done has helped me a lot. Thanks to Ben and Whizb4ng, I now know what 'EXSC' means (and who has it).

Ski, like you I could not find a match for the Qbv. with that Rev. All of the 'Quadriga' coins I could find have a 'helmeted' bust on the Obv.

A.M. The seller does say that the coin is 'Rare', (never heard that before), but in this case perhaps it is so rare that there is no recoded entry for it?

Have we exhausted everything, or is there something left that we haven't tried?
