Hi, I have just been sorting through some coins and have found three dime coins with the date and a P above them. The dates are 2014, 2013 and 2005.

Is there any significance with the P above the date? I also have a 1965 dime (no letter) but it looks the same as the newer ones with the two tone rim.

Any advice you can give would be great.
Thanks
Ian

The P means it was minted in Philadelphia. P mintmarks were added to dimes in 1980.

I moved your thread to the variety and error sub-section. And can you post pictures of the coins in question?

Here is the tutorial about uploading and posting images

From 1980 on all dimes have the mint marks there, if there isn't a letter it's worth something. The two-tone rim means it's clad and not the 90% silver variety from pre-1965.

Yep, the P stands for the Phildalphia mint, D for Denver mint, S for sanfransisco, and W for west point. The '65 coin doesn't have a MM on it because they were not added untill 1980, and its not silver so the "two toned rim" is the cladding. Cool that you got theese in the UK, though!

For Philadelphia, yes. However, where the '65, '66, and '67 issues (of any denomination) are concerned, there were no mint marks used, to reduce the amount that would be saved by collectors (due to the transition from silver to clad coinage, and a feared coin shortage that would ensue)
