in the 1926 near and far date "6" do you have to have both coins to have a complete set ? I ask because the far date looks like it can get up in the money. Bruce. Edited by BRUCE 1947 11/09/2007 8:25 pm

I believe you do, but if you don't like the prices for the far 6, then don't look at the prices for the 1925, they're worse! I'm missing all three in my set, and probably will for quite some time. Edit: For others reading, I'm 99% sure that Bruce is referring to his latest endeavour, the Canadian nickel set.

I think this one set me back about $75.00 a few years ago.

I actually have 2 of these, this one and one graded F-12 by ICCS. I will also mention that according to both Charlton and CCN trends, up to AU this coin is worth about twice as much as the 1925. Bill Image: far6.jpg20.56 KB

I feel your pain Bruce! I have the whole set except for the far 6 :( Far six is seeming a little to pricey for my liking at this point too!

You have the option of adding the far 6 or not, it's at your discretion. Most albums have a slot for it, but you could just as easily put another 1926 near in the slot and 99% of people won't know the difference. I have one, but am getting rid of it as I don't see it as a significant part of the nickel collection. I think you'd be better off putting the extra money into a really nice 1925 instead.

I found TWO 47-dots in the same junk nickel bin one day! The shop owner is an extremely nice guy, but after finding the first one, I panicked that he might not let me buy it for 25 cents. So I looked really hard for a second one to give him - and amazingly I found one! He got one and I kept one!

Back to the original question posed, I read a coin guide one time (can't remember which one) that stated something to this effect (and I'm only paraphrasing):
We feel that the differences between the 26 near and far date varieties are trivial and insignificant, and only list the two varieties here due to their popularity with collectors.
Indeed, I agree that there are more significant variety pairs for 5 cents which are overlooked because each is relatively common: 1922, 1953, 1977, 1996, etc.
Hopefully that's a slight bit of evidence to help you spend the $125 on something more useful - like an 1884 5c in F, or three rolls of 1948 5c. :)
