I've been wondering.....
I don't have much luck going to a bank to ask for rolls like I would the other coins (they never have any).
I'd be lucky to get a few, but never in rolls.

Are Kennedy half dollars minted for circulation like our cents, nickles, dimes and quarters each year?

Just out of curiosity,
mila_

Hi Mila,
As I understand it, new Kennedy half dollars are being made, but only in small quantities for sale to collectors. They were being released to circulation until 2001 so you can find most clad dates from 1971 through 2001 if you look hard enough. The 1987 was only made for mint sets and dates before 1971 are the silver ones, so you won't see too many of those.

I think you should check out some other banks! Some of them will have at least a few rolls of circulated halves and often they are happy to get rid of them. Keep trying!

Hi Mila,
Get real friendly with the commercial teller at your bank if possible, if you need more than a couple rolls of anything I would wait in line for the commercial teller. If they do not routinely order half dollars then you might ask them to order you a box- make sure you can buy the whole 500$ box, or explain you will get a few rolls every week.
I never return the rolled coins to the same bank I got them at and that seems to work .
If I am driving out of town I sometimes stop in at various banks and ask for halves, some have them, some don't , and some will not give you anything unless you are a customer. Smaller town banks can be great for customer rolled coins and I have had the best luck finding silver in those rolls. It seems the rolls from the fed have less and less silver these days.
As for finding anything after 2001, I have looked through about 4000 dollars in halves this year and found only five coins dated later than 2001, but you never know what's in there until you tear it open ! The thrill of the chase and the occasional score keeps it fun !

If they don't carry them, the bank can order Fed boxes for you to go through ($500 a box).

I have become friends with my bank guy. I can call him up and ask him to order some halves. He has to get 2 boxes each time so I just get em both. I search em and take em back to a different bank then I transfer the money to paypal then to my first bank to start it al over again.

Also just asking any teller at the bank doesn't seem to work. You need to talk with the person in charge of the vault. The teller will usually only tell you that they have no rolls. The bank could have may rolls sitting in the vault.

I've been buying rolls of Kennedy half dollars from the mint in recent years. The low mintages insure that the supply of recent Kennedy's will always be in short supply. Compare the recent mintages with those of the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. I think the mint charges $35 for a P&D roll from each year. If you can afford it, I recommend stashing away one of each every year. I'm not sure if you can even get recent rolls from the banks. If so, then it's DEFINATELY a steal to get them at face value.
