To all,

This is my one of my most recent acquisitions, an 8 Reales from Madrid. The year even if illegible is very likely 1650 or 1651. The coin weighs 27,64 g and has the following maximum dimensions: width 31 mm, height 35 mm and thickness 3 mm.

This appears to be a variant classified by Cayón as Cy640vte where the assayer A (Agustín Mayens) is struck over assayer B (Juan Bautista de Barniches). Cayón claims this is a very rare variant and that there are no more than 5 specimens ( http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=344107 )

Thank you MathieuMa, glad you like this coin. Do not know what to think about the rarity though. I have a coin struck during the 80 years war between the Netherlands and Spain and there is only one known specimen which is the one I have, so one could say it is a unique piece, but it remains a simple coin nonetheless. I relativize everything nowadays.

Actually, I don't care much about rarity for what I collect (one of each type / denomination - sometime I go after variants as well).
But when you stumble upon one, that fits in your target, that's cool :D
I recently did with a superb Zacatecas, which had an error . well, it's better than the same type without error !

The Madrid mint is quite scarce, I took a cool one as well (but 4 reales) just because I liked the look and the mint mark, will post it in another topic.

When I bought this coin I did not even realize it was a variant. I thought the B was odd looking that's all. :-) I am not particularly looking for variants but it is nice to have this one, even though I would have been content with a regular 8 reales from Madrid or any other mint for that matter. Recently I am moving away from my main collecting area since I can not find what I am looking for. I am primarily focussed on coins from Philips II, the siege coins of the 80 years war between Spain and the Low Countries and the Spanish Civil War.
