Homer, the mint marks were all hand struck. There can be a lot of variance on the position of the mark.

Hi, I don't believe that to be true. However, if it was hand struck it's not real, it's altered. Mona lisa's bow tie was hand struck do you believe that! Ha Ha Ha?

There were 4 obverse dies used to strike 09-S VDB cents.

The mintmark was hand punched into each of those 4 dies, so there are 4 possible mintmark positions for 09-S VDB cents.

The mintmark on this coin appears consistent with one of the 4 dies.
The appearance of the VDB and its position also appears consistent.
