I have to be honest I often doubted the customer wrapped roll stories. Today I was proven wrong. I got 150 in customer wrapped rolls, it was AMAZING!! I got 9 40% ers whichis awesome considering I often pull 1-2 from a whole fed box. I am now a convert.

Keep up the good work, and the good posts!

I went to this poor little bank that was inside of a gas station near my work. I wiped them out of every single half they had!

I bought $591.50 in halves and I had $1.00 left in my wallet! There were about 15 different kinds of papers rolls so I thought I was gonna hit the jackpot

Found 7 40% and a James Monroe Dollar

My first 1000 dollars I did a couple months ago. FED wrapped. Found 4 90 percents, 12 40 percents, and one NIFC.

I just got done going through my second thousand. And found...

NOTHING......NADDA.......$1000 DOLLARS OF CRAP CLAD

And I have literally hit up nineteen different banks. NINETEEN! And none of them had customer wrapped rolls, or fifty cent pieces of any kind. I have no more places to search through it my area. This is crap.

Elimist,

You will just have to do a road trip or stick to fed boxes. I don't know how much capital you have and your area, but a possible idea is this.

1. Get say $1000-$2000 cash out of the bank (unless you know you will have access to your banks ATM or will pay the service fee at another bank)

2. Drive to other town on a day off, and just start stopping at every bank and buying halves (I would not buy more than $100 at a place. I would check the rolls in the car and only buy the rest if they are good. You don't want to spend all the cash on somone elses dumps. Write down the bank though so you know there are halves there in case you have cash left towards the end of the trip)

3. Search all of them and dump the halves at your bank.

Please note, that you need enough cash for the chance to find a lot of halves to cover gas cost. Also you could end up with nothing or you could find 100$ in 40% at one bank like I did last week. It is all luck after you start doing volume.

If you live in the Southeast don't please disregard.

One of my Granddaughters (9 years old and still thinks pawpaw is cool LOL) and I jumped on the motorcycle and went 35 miles to a small town with only 2 banks. We found only $45 in halves, none of which were worth anything other than .50 each LOL. We DID find a small cafe with a great lunch and had a blast so it was an overwhelming success in the "what's really valuable" department

When we got back to our town we picked up 2 of the boxes of halves that I ordered. First box had 12 40%ers. Second box had no silver at all but we did find 2 1974d DDOs but one of those is destroyed because someone had taken a knife or screwdriver and scrathced lines across the obverse.

We have 1 more box to work today and may do another "roadtrip" after halves this afternoon.

I'm enjoying my "mini-vacation".....2 extra days off this week!

My Granddaughter and I just finished the final box and found 5 40%, 1 90% (64 Kennedy), a 1980 clad proof, 2 2003p NIFC Kennedys, and a 2004d NIFC Kennedy. Now we are going to go thru a box of cents for her collection.

Gramps, who is having a blast on his mini-vacation

Got one box yesterday, all rolls are black-marked so I knew there was no silver to be had...but, did find some anomalies. 00-S clad proof, 2 08-Ps, gold-plated 95-P (kind of a random date), a 71 with a hole bored right through Kennedy's head just underneath the "E" in Liberty (a new ornament for Christmas), and a 76 worn down to Good-VG condition (pretty much). I read somewhere that there was talk of a person who was putting together a 7070 collection but in Poor-AG condition and this just may be the perfect half dollar for them.

And a few dates with very weak FGs.

Hello to all. I wish I had some half dollar stories, but I just started searching rolls a few days ago, and only nickels. But, if all goes as planned, I'm gonna try to get some halves today. I've only searched about 15 rolls of nickels and already two buffalo, a good 1940, and a solid roll of '05 D Buffalo reverse nickels ef-au. Hopefully I'll have the same luck with the halves.

All of this info is really helping novice guys like myself.

I just went through my first roll of half dollars. The only thing I found of interest was a 1971 D. I heard that some of these are 40% silver. Is that true? If so, how do you tell which ones are silver?

"A few pieces dated 1971D and 1977D were struck in silver clad by mistake." I wonder if anyone knows how rare they are.

EDIT: And what is "silver clad"? Isn't silver and clad something completely different?

I think it's called silver clad because it's only 40% silver and mixed with other stuff, but I'm no expert. The 71D I found actually looks silver, almost like a worn silver dollar, but it has a broad band of copper around the edge. Hopefully I'll get some more soon; one roll just didn't last long enough.

90% Silver - 90% silver and 10% copper, solid.
40% Silver Clad - 80% silver 20% copper surfaces that are bonded to a core of 79% copper and 21% silver.
Copper-Nickel Clad - 75% copper and 25% nickel surfaces that are bonded to a core of pure copper.

Thanks jbuck. But is there a way to tell if I have a Silver Clad 1971D?
