I stopped by a Chase bank this afternoon and asked if they had any half dollars. Several of the tellers did. However before I got them the manager inspected each of them and told the tellers that sometimes they contain silver. He then said there was no silver, and handed them over to me. I did, however, walk away with a 2003, so it was a totally wasted trip.
Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do?

Eaglefoot- I go through 3K at a time. I have the bank order them for me. This was the best batch I have had. I am usually happy with about 10 - 20 of any type of silver. I just open the roll and look for the silver, I don't bother with the DDO etc. I have gotten very adept at being able to see the proofs and NIFCs by the rim. I just keep an eye out for BOLD strikes and new, flashy UNC rims, that may be wider than average. So really, I probably only end up looking at 2 - 3 coins a roll if no silver and I have gotten those proofs and NIFCs. There are surely some that I miss, but it wuld take too long to move through EACH coin individually. Good hunting! Morgantype

So you guys order boxes of halves... I should start doing that. Where do all the halves come from, the nearest Federal Bank branch?
And is ordering boxes less fruitful than looking for hand-rolled coins?

Went through an amazing 8 rolls a couple of days ago!
Been heavily searching local banks for halves recently, with mixed results. Last weekend found 63 40% and 11 90% in 10 rolls from the same bank, but the weekdays after that had been pretty frustrating (including a bank that had 40 rolls from the Fed; thought they would be good, but only found two 40% and interestingly enough 6 Proofs, all of which had been defaced by a black Sharpie!)
But the 8 rolls from a couple of days ago contained nothing except NIFC pieces (mostly 2006 and 2007), including 10 Clad Proofs (one 04s, one 05s, and 8 06s) and amazingly 10 2006-s Silver Proofs! All had minimal contact marks, and were in beautiful shape!

Today I went through some customer wrapped rolls:
2 1964, 3 40% and a 1970 S Proof! The 1970 S was pretty sweet!!
happy hunting!

I ordered two FED boxes of halves, but the teller made a mistake and only ordered one. I hate it when that happens, but something is better than nothing. My only find was a 1977 S proof, they rest were junk. I really would love to find a great box soon, I'm overdue for something big. Anyways, keep searching!!

What is the face value of a box of halves? Is it $500?

I had a teller pull a walker out of a pile before giving them to me. I wanted to say if you are going through them then just keep em. I didn't and just took them. Tellers weeding out silver is part of the game. They shouldn't leave them on the tray. I didn't have an account at that bank either. I might have been more pushy if I had an account.

Something like that happened to me Friday. The teller had $11.50 in loose halves and I had $11 cash. So she said "Let me pull an ugly one" and pulled out a 1966. I said, "Hey, no I want that one." It was the only silver in the stack. At another bank when I asked around the teller said he knew what I was looking for and not to waste my time because he was pulling all silver that came in for himself. At least he was up front about it!
Went through $520 in rolls that day and no silver. :-/

Morgantype..... Quote: This was the best batch I have had. I am usually happy with about 10 - 20 of any type of silver. Yeah, I look through them pretty much the same way, though I do inspect each and every one, but I only do $500.00 at a time (or less if I find customer wrapped) But for quite some time......ANY silver at ALL has been a factor around here......very frustrating and now it's been awhile for me. I'm tired of coming up with "an empty sack" every time. If I can't find at least ONE 40% in 3 $500.00 boxes and $1,500.00 or so in various customer wrapped in a month time period......it's time for a break !!.... But Man !...I sooooo like reading here about "other people's" finds !....It still gives me some hope about being "lucky" !..

Went through another $1200 today and found 11 40%er's and TWO Walkers (1943 S and 1945). Was really surprised to see two Walkers. Also found 3 NIFC's (2005 P and D and 2006 P)

Just got back from Reno. Asked the cage if they had any Half Dollar rolls at the Nugget. She said yes. I gave her $300. Looked through all. Not one silver. Do they search for silver and pull em? Also, If I order through my bank, I'm afraid they will give me the plastic wrapped ones with all clad as well. Any thoughts?

This might sound like a silly question, but how can you tell the NIFC from the others?
