And a proof bicentennial as well... is it 40% for certain?
No. There were two proofs issued for the bicentennial. One Cu-Ni clad that was included in the 1975 and 1976 proof sets, and a 40% silver proof included in the special three coin sets (Quarter, Half, and Dollar); these three coin sets came in a proof and uncirculated version.

Bah. How on earth can I tell? I don't have a scale THAT accurate- it wouldn't be able to differentiate between 11.5 and 11.34 grams.

Also, were the 2005s NIFC? For some reason all the years from 2002-2007 are EXCEPT that one. RedBook misprint?

The 40% silver coins do look different than that Cu-Ni clad. If you have one of each, for example a 1967 and a 1977, then you can usually see the difference.

I cover the coin with a thin, white sheet of paper (cheap tissue works best since you want translucence), then shine a bright light on the coin (doing it at an angle works best). The 90% and 40% silver coins reflect back through whiter than the paper, the Cu-Ni clads will reflect grayer. Again, it helps if you have one silver and one Cu-Ni clad to compare with.

AFAIK, all 2002 and newer Half Dollars were NIFC; so I think it is a misprint. I will check my Red Book when I get home.

Plus there is the sweeter ringing sound from the silver.

Went through 3 boxes...nothing at all and most of the halves were so beat up and bag marked that I probably wouldn't keep if they were hard to find.

Hey all: I haven't been on the 'Community' for a few weeks. Going on 2 weeks ago I got 15 rolls that looked like they had been searched, but to my delight, out of the 300 coins, 274 were 40%. I went back a week later saying I had a 'few' good ones in the last batch; did they have anymore? They said I got all they had last week, suggesting it was a lady that cleaned out a drawer and brought the 15 rolls in. There have been times when I refuse a large amount, because you just know they had been searched. We've all been there! After this, I doubt I'll pass on any quantity.

I forgot to ask a question.
Has anyone heard of the armored car services sorting out silver? I seem to have better luck with Brinks than I do with Garda. These are the two armored services that service the banks I use. I was told that the 'Coin Star' machines that are usually found in grocery stores do this. They WILL NOT accept silver coins. I don't know about Silver, but last week I found a 1943-D (steel) in a coin return. Since there aren't many pay phones around anymore, which as a kid I would always look in, we now have these.

I have searched probably around $500 in Brinks rolled halves and found 0 but have searched around $200 dollars worth of hand rolled and found 2 90% and 5 40%. alot of work for so few but uterly satisfying to find. It would not suprise me from my experience if they did if the bank teller didn't get them First.

Coinrus;
I have always had pretty good luck with the customer rolled coins, but the early bird gets the worm. As far as tellers go, there are a few smart ones that look, but then there are the ones who would give you a double eagle, and not know what it is. If I worked in a bank, I wouldn't get any work done!

I left off coin fishing half rolls and a buddy said don't give up. I got a $500 box and found zilch, nada nothing. The next $500 box yielded 12 40%, 1 1998 Proof, 3 1986 and one 1987 P AU. Blew me away as this was the best finds in a long time.
Happy Fishing

I went through 4 boxes lately -

1 90%, 10 40% and 1 2008 S Proof, that one really blew me away! I couldn't believe I found a 2008 proof already, crazy.

TO answer your question nod2003, I haev never been shorted any rolls intheboxes I have searched.

Good luck to everyone!

Morgantype:
That is something. The proof sets haven't been out that long. I know someone already found 2008's. I got 3 the other day, along with a 64 and a 53 Ben; all in the same roll. That was after going thru a box and a half of nothing. The pickings might be slowing down around major cities. Happy Hunting!
