I picked up a decent 1875-S 20c but the coin appears to have a coat of lacquer on it. Seems to have some good luster under the yellowing coating. I am tempted to give this one a bath in acetone but not sure how it will turn out. What say you, would you try to remove the coating or leave it alone? My guess is there is a real nice AU coin under the yellowing top coat.   |

My advice .......leave it alone or get it professionally conserved by ANACS or NGC. That looks like it could be a nice mint state coin under there. Do not mess with it yourself.

The reverse detail is amazing! I find this coin hard to photograph. Nice pickup.

As a large cent collector I own several lacquered coins and the best advice is to leave it alone.

I'm pretty fearless about in-home conservation, but....not this one. That is one well-struck 20c.

Learned something in this thread. My initial reaction was, "Sure, give it a bath, why not." I would have been wrong. Pays to ask first.

I would send it to ANACS. Very inexpensive. You could probably get it graded and conserved for about $40.00, not including shipping. Well worth it.

I know exactly what to do about this coin, to include what to do if the initial work is of less quality than I hoped. I would handle the job with confidence. But we always have to consider our greater responsibility to the history we're protecting here. This one's a little too important in the grand scheme of things for me to advise in good faith that someone do it non-professionally. If it were my coin, the conservation would already be done. You would never have seen nor heard of it in this condition, and I wouldn't have mentioned the conservation as long as the result was appropriate ("appropriate" meaning a result experts would consider appropriate). If I'd screwed it up, you would have heard the whole story as a cautionary tale, me washing the keyboard with tears as I typed it out. Don't be that guy. I can't recommend ANACS for this one, either. Two reasons: First, their lower valuation in the marketplace and second, they haven't been doing conservations for long. I haven't seen enough of their conserved coins - as I have PCGS and NGC - to form an opinion of their skills. |

You guys have brought up some good points. If this were a cheaper coin I would have done the acetone bath without even mentioning it. I was tempted with this one but kept dragging my feet. That's why I tossed the question out here to help sway my thinking. I'll most likely take the NGC route and have them conserve and grade this one. I would love to see it get an MS grade but my gut tells me it's high AU. At least that's how I bought it.

Send it to ANACS you will not only save money but will be pleasantly surprised. One thing is based on what is happening right now ANACS is by far the most conservative of the three so called major TPG. The last two lots I have had back from ANACS have been very well graded , read conservative! Also if you are buying the coin and not the holder it will not be an issue. Edited by Pacificoin
