I just really enjoy details and thinking how did things happen and how can I tell. Like I say I've been collecting coins for a long time but the best stuff I ever got my hands on was nowhere near the quality of stuff I've seen on this grading forum.

When I got a bunch of better coins it gave me a lot of new stuff to look at and think about. When I was a kid about 8- college years I read 20 year old redbooks obsessively and could have told you every date that was key, semi key etc.. but I figured that was the end of the story.

I was afraid to get just browbeat asking about what I have so I tried and tried to research on the internet but everything is so inconsistent. Finally like a man asking for directions at a gas station I put my pride aside and found a way to consult real experts. And hey I'm not glad to be disappointed if something isn't what I hoped it would be, but I don't want to go around thinking I have a treasure when it is a lump. That allows me closure (i know it's not that serious)

I hope to have more to offer one day in terms of questions that may seem nit-picky or even stupid. When I am reunited with my new collection I need help in a big way in terms of like "is it this grade or that?". Until I get a full grasp - the photograde site didn't help me learn much more than details on devices. For now I have only those two coins - well I also have a Walking Liberty half I got with a jacknife that had a walker on it. but that thing is also a lump that I hold on to just to look at what a nice design it is.

cheers guys
dan

i was already planning on it! I brought these coins out of my storage specifically to take to the last one, but I missed it. I wanted to go to the table where you can take it to them and they grade it and you pick it up in a day or two. Is it true they do it? Since I am new to the idea of actually having anything graded I was too scared to take it to a store and then trust them to send it and then get it back and all that. I wanted to take it straight to the horse's mouth. Am I overly paranoid? I have seen a lot of strange things since I started living out here :)

I would wait to start playing the slab game until you have a better Handel on the hobby which won't take too long if you stick with ccf, reading every post and asking EVERY question you have no mattention how mundane.
You should however definatly take that 94 to long Beach with you and go to the pcgs area and do a "walkthrough" Submition. That one deserves a slab asap and since your going why not.

That will cost you a pretty penny. No less than $65/coin, you have to submit a minimum of 5, and max value per coin is $3000. It goes up from there. Those are PCGS numbers, for the record.

PCGS and NGC require memberships for submissions, although ANA membership qualifies you to submit to NGC (a rather neat way to do it for $25/yr). These memberships come with free submissions, and can be pretty cost-effective if you do the membership level which allows you the most free submissions.

Many dealers will let you "piggyback" your own coins with their submissions, perhaps in return for a little consideration. And with PCGS located in Santa ANA, chances are you can find a local dealer who hand-carries submissions to them.

Yeah, I really need to do more research on getting things graded, the cost etc... I am still going to bring the 1894 to long beach, sadly I don't have 5 coins to grade, but I can talk to them about options and stuff. I just watched a webinar they gave at another long beach show on youtube and it got me scared. They talked about coins they won't grade and brought up scratches. How much is too much? Do you think this is too bad? I can see it without magnification if I put it the light and turn it back and forth.

Not a chance that one escapes a Details slab. Far too much.

Ya, sorry to say its definitely going to details grade. Anacs is a good route though for details coins because they A: they are a top 3 TPG (pcgs, ngc, anacs. In that order) B: Anacs will put a numerical grade on the slab like "au-50 details" instead of just "au details" and C: you don't need a membership, just send the coin in with a form and $ and boom. Too bad I can't go to long Beach this year or I'd tear it up.with you

Actually if anacs is going to be there just have them grade it there

That one spot is enough. Coin Grading has a very strict ruleset especially at the ms level albeit overall it is subjective. Not as bad as paper money though. Those guys are crazy nuts on grading

is it still worth to get it graded for details? I want to preserve it too anyway and I bet the slab is better than the flip thingy I have it in :)

Yes, like dave said you likely have a $500 coin minimum. Get it in one asap... rule of thumb: with high dollar rare or low mintage key dates details grades aren't as bad as lower end coins. Supply and demand dictates the market and they still hold high values albeit not quite how the same non details coin would

My rule of thumb is $150 minimum retail value, and room for profit on top of grading cost. That and coins whose authenticity should be guaranteed.

That's great. I am excited to have a coin that is even worth encapsulating. Now I need to work on the logistics of getting my hands back on the others I didn't get to actually look at with the same eyes you guys have given me now. I don't trust the regular mail for 200 or so Morgan dollars, any good suggestions on sending them on a pretty much cross country trip ?I think I might have some real high grade ones in there. The only polished one was that 1921, but I chose that to take because it was so unusual (in a bad way). I passed a couple more up as my pick for the one to bring that had the original surface for sure but like I say I thought the polished one was like a proof or something due to its shine.

And of course the 1894 I knew to be a lower mintage date from my years reading the Red Book.

Long beach sounds like a blast, I was on the fence about going as of yesterday but now I'm all about it. And yeah I will go with your advice on getting it at least with a number grade because that will be descriptive for me to look at for comparison in the future.

I send 4 figure packages occasionally. I just pay a little extra for registered mail. They keep it under lock and key all the way and it comes with up to $20,000 insurance. Should cost around $25 but worth it for the peace of mind. Heck I just sent a $2000 package to one of our friends on here that attributes VAMs. Come to think of it he may be able to help you. You may want to send it to him and have him throw it in his bulk sub. It will be cheaper for you plus you'll get it attributed by one of the best in the game. I'm not sure if its too late or not though. I'll ping him for you
