I have been looking for the right coin for quite some time now. I wanted a coin of Caligula, his sister Agrippina Jr., or her son, Nero. I finally saw this nice silver denarius of Nero and decided to try for it. I liked it because the words are all legible and the portrait is very detailed. I have not received it yet, but it will be the first ancient coin I've ever owned or seen in real life that I know of. I know it has a few spots on its edges that probably hurt value and I don't quite know what the silver toning should look like. I would love to get some impressions from people with experience. Did I buy a fake coin? Does the tone look good? Does it look over cleaned? Would you have passed on it because of its problems? Anyway, it's going to be fun to hold a piece of history shortly. Thanks.

I am afraid that you bought a cast fake If I were you I would try to get my money back. Good luck; and don't let this one fake destroy a great hobby for you.

What makes you guys say it is a cast fake?
When you say cast, do you mean cast coin or cast die and then a coin struck from that cast die?
What is up with those waxy, whitish looking deposits on the reverse?

My first thought was "fake" based on the "off" style of the obverse but, personally, I was thinking it was a struck fake. Perhaps you guys are right and it's cast...either way, though (cast or struck), I join you all in leaning towards it being a modern fake.
Welcome, Wampdog. Don't be discouraged!

Did not expect this. The seller has 100% satisfaction rating over hundreds of transactions, so I trusted the seller. I know those ratings don't mean everything. I have a 14 day return option from the time I receive it...so I'm not burned yet, but it is disappointing. Does anyone think it's real? Maybe when I get it I can post better photos.

I have to agree with the others, a cast fake. Did you buy this from ebay, if so who was the seller?

Firstly Nero was ugly ..... but not that ugly ! Personally I am unsure if it is cast. But the odd rough spots on the edges could well correspond to the point where a sprue was attached.
Needless to say Nero does not look right at all ! The face looks as if a small face were placed on a 'normal' sized head. I myself largely gave up on silver 25 years ago due to the high quality fakes which I was being shown by 'experts' whom I trusted.
When buying silver ancients it is best to go through a larger sized dealer who specializes in ancients. The prices for 1st century can be daunting. At this time I think you may be best advised to go after that Caligula you always wanted. I have seen many bronze asses of Caligula in rather fine condition selling for under $100. Claudius for even less !
We will advise you if you post pictures

Can buyer please send link, with auction info so we can see if they are a bad dealer, and how the auctions are going? It helps us confirm a fake if we notice an auction seller with hundreds of private bids, location in Russia, and or other fake coins. Then can I suggest to the moderators that we setup a standard warning link or permanent topic section labeled, Before you buy that coin?" In there, we provide a link the the fake coin network or a site that has most of the fake casts, the list of all the banned ebay dealers; a little warning about not trusting ebay, especially when dealer has hundreds of 100 positive comments and private bids. Some here are skeptical it is fake. My gut tells me it is fake, but I could be wrong. Further, if I see the auction and garner some facts from there I can further confirm it. A year into this and, I don't know a lot, but feeling it's fake. I just find it tedious to have to keep listing the individual warnings for ebay buyers, so feel we need to setup some helpful standard info.

Before anyone hits me for not mentioning our permanent fake coin list, I know that exists, but it seems we need to do more. The truth is no one wants to peruse through thousands of coins looking for fake pictures. So more importantly and less time consuming would be a criteria listing and safety reading on buying from ebay, with helpful tips, plus a link to the banned sellers.
