They wouldn't pay them in cash but in "company money" they could only spend in the company run town. Then workers started to revolt and Pinkertons were called in to quell the uprising but did so by shooting any workers still resisting causing riots. A very interesting part of history from the industrial revolution... I found this association listed in a 1910 Toronto City directory at 75 Yonge Street. This helps to date the token. I found mention of a similar co-op in Guelph, some years earlier. X2an Pillar of the Community Sweden 1078 Posts	Posted 05/07/2015 10:09 am I don't think it's aluminium. It looks very thin, as with many other company tokens. As for actual material, I can't say anything definite, but I'd guess it's zinc. I've got myself plenty of company tokens made out of zinc, some of which are so thin they are bendable. Quite a few are of a tinny lightweight metal showing the front in reverse on the back. I think they were made this way for cheapness. Report this Post to the Staff
