Hello folks. Note sure if it's customary to go to the introduction board and all that, but had some questions about a couple notes, and went to this forum first. So, hello anyone and everyone, and thanks in advance for any guidance that can be provided regarding these fairly standard notes: The first is a $5 Australian note. From the serial, when comparing with info from Australia's central banking authority, I'm wondering if this might be a "test" note. The issue is 1) the serials I've found don't run this high, but 2) it's the only Evans/MacFarlane note I could find that even has a serial that begins with "DM." I'm not familiar with banknotes, and this note, and the one that follows, was brought back by my grandmother who kept it as a souvenir from her trip to Australia in the late-1990s. I've done fair bit of research, but have hit a dead end, as I don't think I know the best places to look, I'm uploading images, but am not sure if they will appear directly below this description, or at the bottom of the post, as this is my first...I promise that my next explanation is shorter... The second is a $5 note from NZ, and I wasn't able to date it by the serial, though suspect from changes made to some of the markings before the note was redesigned completely for issue this year that it is from the early- or mid-1990s. Again, I think it's simply a matter of not knowing the best places to look. I checked the central banking authority's website in this case as well, among other sources, but didn't end up with a conclusive date. Doesn't seem to be from 1992, but also I get the impression it isn't much older. I could be way off, though. Just trying to get some better info. I'd like to sell them and provide accurate info. They are decent for circulated notes, and I'm sure someone would like to have them. The shops around here have been of no help. Thanks in advance for any info!

The Aussie note is a 1997 issue (the first two numbers of the serial denoting year of issue). Catalog value in VF about $15.
The NZ note was issued between 1992-1999. It would be difficult to date it accurately and depends on the letters prefix. At a rough guess I'd say possibly mid 1990s. Catalog value in VF about $12.

Thanks for the info. I was able to peg the Aussie note to a 1997 issue, but the problem comes with the serial number. As far as I was able to understand, only the test notes for that year had any serials that began with DM. As I've made clear, I could be mistaken, of course, but that's what seems to be the case, with the exception that it didn't appear that the test notes had serials that ran that far down, since they are supposedly sequential. going in reverse. While I'm puzzled by the year for the NZ note, I'm more puzzled by whether the Aussie note is a test note or not. I doubt my luck would be that good. lol Still, What evidence I could find points in that direction. That said, I'm not sure if I understand the data correctly. The NZ note would appear to be early- to mid-1990s, as you state, and I've had a hard time finding a comprehensive list of serials for this note. The serial seems to indicate that it's not on the tail-end of the first run before they made some design modifications, which I suspect was in 1999. Still difficult to pend down. I found a buyer for that one, I think, and for a decent price. We'll see if they pay up, though. Someone in the Russian Federation made an offer, and my luck with customers from there has been mixed....no offense to any members of the Russian Federation here in the forums, since I'm really only speaking about 3 experiences, two bad, one good.
Thanks again for your input! If anyone else has something to add, I'd welcome it. Thanks!

Just happened to have a look at my collection and I have only one from the 1995-1999 series. It just so happens to be a 1997 and guess what? Just as a matter of interest in the 2002-2012 series I have the prefixes: 2002 CM 2003 DM 2005 FM

Was just trawling and came across another on the internet. I would suggest that this one may be a test note.

On that last one, it may well be the case. The prefix and corresponding numbers look right on. Also, thanks for posting your DM from 1997! This would suggest that the serials posted on the Australian central banking system's (I forget the official name) site is incomplete regarding serials for this particular year, or I missed something in the graphic they post. That graphic suggests that DM prefixes were only used for test notes, though the numbers don't match, since the test notes all seem to go DM 99 *** ***. Thanks again for all the help!

Serial numbers go from AA-AM, anything AN and over is a test note. The HK 97 I believe was issued to commemorate the Hong Kong handover.
