Wide AM doesn't apply to 81 cent proof as far as I know. The only variety for the 81 s proof is the Type 1 and Type 2 where the mint marks are slightly different.

I'm not sure so don't quote me but I think there's a 1990 s proof that supposed to be close-am, but the rare one is a wide-am. Or something like that.

From my understanding the 1998, 1999 and 2000 Wide AM varieties were the result of proof reverse dies being used for circulation strikes. If this is the case, then all proofs should be Wide AM. |

Except for the 1993 proof cent. The business strike and proof had the narrow AM. The pre 1992 (starting with 1959) business strike coins were wide A M cents.(Except for a few rare ones that were narrow AM) 1993 Proof and business strikes were the same Close AM. Business strike 1993 forward were the Close AM and the proofs except for the 1993 are wide A M. (Except for a few 1998, 1999 & 2000 Cents that had the reverses of the proof design, but were hubbed as business strike dies, never used for proof dies and re-cycled like the 1956-1964 type "B" quarters) Edited by coop

1981 is a completely different reverse altogether - has nothing at all to do with the close or Wide AM. |

Coop, is there a book you would recommend regarding the history of Lincoln Cent Production. The info you had about the AM and die differences sounds like you might be referencing something. If so, I would love to get a copy of it. Thx, Jim |
