People in Canada still on occasion spend 50 cent pieces.

Weird. In all my years, I've never seen one being used in retail. Even as a banker only the odd piece would get deposited and never with me. I thought it could be a regional thing, but you've indicated you're in the same part of the country.

I honestly had never seen a 50 cent coin. Until recently! It was mistakened as a quarter... Not sure how, but it was. Swapped it out for a real quarter and called it mine haha. I have never seen people intentionally spend them. Though they WILL willingly spend old bills (I have a 1 dollar bill, and old (1937?) 20 dollar bill).

There's one dollar store I go to and now the manager LOVES me as I occasionally spend a .50 piece or the old nickel dollars out there and the staff just get a kick out of it.

Spent two in Washington state this morning , not even a comment. Here in B C I will often leave halves dollar coins in nickel and one and two dollar bills as tips . Spent one last week at a grocery store and the young cashier said that's valuable you know. Priceless!

For me, the answer is no. This is because I'm too young to ever see dollar and half dollar coins circulate in Canada. I've received two 50 cent coins working at McDonald's over the past three years. The first time, I assumed it was a toonie and bought it for a dollar so my till wasn't as short. The second, my manager saw a 1971 and gave it to me. If I ever got too many that were worth holding on to, I might spend some for fun.

When I lived in Cali, I would leave them as tips and spend them at yard sales whenever I would do some roll searching. I never stuck around to see the reactions though. I would do the same with an occasional Ike, SBA, and Sac.

EDIT: After living in europe, I think I will go out of my way to acquire and use $.50 and $1 coins. My only compaint being the US halves are a bit big to lug alot around in your pocket.
