Up until this specimen of the 1935 DDO-001 was uncovered, it appeared only be known in a circulated grade with muddy images in Wexler's, The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die. As such it was largely ignored as anything special.

I got this one out of the late Reg Martin's estate and it made my jaw drop when I saw it. Apparently up until this time, nobody had seen the variety in an earlier die state in BU except Reg.

When JT saw that images he said he had to get it into CPG. He was supplied the images but between that time and the next edition going to press he was able to photograph one himself, resulting in less than spectacular imagery.

Apparently, there was a decision to got with substandard photos over quality photos which may continue on into the next edition.

Since then, other nice examples have been found and photographed but if you have not seen this variety in an early die state in Mint State this should be a treat!

kakaratt77,

Thanks! I know I often seem to sensationalize in telling my stories but it's because I get excited reminiscing tales of old.

By the way, I just sent these images to Mike Ellis and Bill Fivaz and hope they can upgrade the images in CPG.
