Did someone do that to test if it was copper or what? It's sure a shame. Anyhow, it's still an incredible find. Have it certified! Get an article in Coin World! Every numismatist in the country will know your name!

I'll have to start weighing all my 1983s and 1982-D small dates, and ask my parents to set them aside. I didn't even know about these until now, and I suspect not enough people bother checking, so I'm sure there are plenty more for us to find.

If verified to be copper I hope it's worth more than copper melt in that condition.

I believe it would be worth a bit more than melt.

Weight and XRF analysis if available, stat.

Hey, if somehow the damage can be explained (I'm hoping from the mint) wouldn't it be worth more with an error on the coin how cool would that be.

I sure wish it was, but I don't think there's much of a chance.

Whether the damage can be attributed to the mint or outside the mint it happened after it was struck.Still considered a damaged coin.
Definitely need the weight.
