My Goodness I didn't mean to create such a fuss. I didn't realize there were only two others. It weighs 2.6 grams. It is missing a lot of metal from the damage. Is there another way to verify it is copper?

Doesn't weigh enough to be 95% copper. Jeff

Also, I don't think it's missing much metal, the metal just looks 'spread about'. Jeff

Call around to jewelry stores and ask if they have an XRF machine. You need to have it XRF'd immediately if possible. Are you going to the long beach or other large show soon?

Quote: It weighs 2.6 grams. If it were Copper it would weigh around 3.11 grams. The Copper plated Zinc cents weigh 2.5-2.6 grams. Bummer

Here is a 1983-D Zinc cent with similar damage. This one weighs 2.5 grams on my scale, but scales can vary.

Sorry, I was called away. I had no idea of the value of a 83 copper penny. If I had, I would have made absolutely certain before posting. That being said, it looks to me like there could be .6 grams of metal missing on this cent. I'm not a mathematician but I believe that would be about one fifth of the total weight of a copper penny. This picture was cropped only- not edited for color or anything like that. As I look at the reverse where most of the metal was removed, I see no zinc. I see no evidence of zinc anywhere. I guess I'll have it checked. If it is copper, I certainly don't want to damage it any further. What exactly is a XRF machine?
