Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 12/29/2007 10:39 am The counter stamp on the coin is someones name and to my knowledge is nothing more than a vanity marking on the coin ,,in all reality it has taken any numismatic value the coin had and made it into a conversation piece. Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6426 Posts	Posted 12/29/2007 10:02 pm If I'm not mistaken a lot of contemporary merchants would stamp their company name on coins, turning them into advertising vehicles. Some collectors are heavily into counterstamped coins. If 'M. J. Mosher' is a known counterstamp name then some collectors might actually value this cent more highly than an unmarked example with similar wear. Any counterstamped coin collectors out there with some input? Report this Post to the Staff
magusxxx Valued Member United States 306 Posts	Posted 12/30/2007 09:58 am I was going to ask about merchant counterstams as well. I was lucky enough to get a 1795 large penny with one. Hopefully I'll post the picture this week. Somewhere I heard that merchants would have the stamps put on at the mint. This way he'd tell his customers, "Give these back to me when you want to buy something because I know they're legit." Report this Post to the Staff
