There was recently a posting here of a us coin with the li missing from liberty that I lost.My great aunt carried a coin similar to this that her husband had altered to read berty her nickname as a good luck charm.Her great grandfather had a 1821 Hibernia penny altered to read bern as a good luck charm for the voyage from Ireland.I still have that penny.

Interesting alternative to milling off one side and then engraving their names. Both have become a love token of sorts.
