Hi everyone, I recently got a metal detector from a friend and did some 'detecting' around one of our fields. I found a good few coins from 1899-1950 but this sparked my curiosity and made me want tp get a more historical coin collection.

I have decided to start with roman coins. To begon with I'm not really keen on focusing a certain area of roman coins, more like the opposite. I'm looking to get a random mix initially as this is how I feel I can get the most experience and excitement.

My main questions about starting my collection is what other people think about buying uncleaned coins. I have been browsing and I would only buy uncleaned coins that look like there is actually detail there but I have no experience at all with this.

I also know its early to think about this but one of my biggest interests is more ancient greek culture and I would love to branch out. In particular the gods and specifically the spartan culture. Any advice I could be given would be muchly appreciated on this :-).

Finally I found a couple of completely worn coins while detecting that seem to have no detail whatsoever. Does anyone have any tips on how I may be able to recover any detail if at all possible? To be honest I dont have much hope for them.

Cheers all :-)

Welcome, Whyteg69. I'd recommend posing your specific questions over at CCF's "Ancient, Greek, Roman, and Medieval Coins" forum. You'll get some helpful replies there from a knowledgeable and enthusiastic bunch.
