One of the bad things about being a Type collector,

In your case and with the coins I've seen you post over the years, I would say there's nothing bad about you and your type collection. Beautiful specimen!

1845 Half Dime - possible variety

The-43-Days-Of-Half-Dimes!

The-43-Days-Of-Half-Dimes!

Only if I hold the coin at a 45 degree angle using my loop and/or camera the LIBERTY will faintly show up in its entirety: enough to be an F-12.

I didn't feel like messing any further, however, with these photos for grading purposes since more intriguing issues remain.

Here is why I think my 1845 Half Dime 'might' be a new variety:

The-43-Days-Of-Half-Dimes!

At first I thought it was just a 5/3 since the guy I bought it from only had 5/3 written on its Mylar holder. But when I made the closeups it now appears to be a complete 1845/1843.

Any opinions?

My 1845/1843 coin does not appear to be a well documented variety at least from the perspective of the list that I am working off of.

The attached Excel list of Half Dime varieties may prove to be of interest to experienced as well as neophytus collectors.

It originated from:

http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/...ty_index.htm

You can locate this downloadable list about half way down the page with a subject line of 'The Liberty Seated half dime With Varieties Set input form.'

fyi,
mdpmedia

It's not a pretty coin but does show the FS-301 large date variety nicely:

mdpmedia your 1845 is exactly like my 1845. It is not an unknown 5/3 variety, it's just a repunched 5/5

This is my last Half Dime for this thread -- I have only 4 Half Dimes total.

Because of the possibility of this thread evolving into a diversion distancing itself into remotely-related tangential subject matter I elected to create an optional thread to address the above statement in greater detail.

For those readers with the desire to further delve into this topic please visit the following link and give your opinion of which I would be greatly appreciative to have since we appear to be at an impasse:

Pepactonius, the coin you posted is 1851-O not 1857! Your 1851-O is stellar! The New Orleans mint Half Dimes are always a challenge!

Some very pretty Half Dimes have been posted in this thread!
Did I see an 1838 O the lucky owner picked up for $5.?! I have been lusting after that New Orleans date for long time.
