I'm not a Peace dollar man because to me they are weakly struck and very little eye appeal. they just don't turn me on. but when I saw your photo of this 1928 I said to myself this is either the best Peace dollar I've ever seen (MS-68) Or a fake. so IMHO, way to good to be true and something messed with the 8 in date.

Quote: way to good to be true and something messed with the 8 in date. The 8 in a 1928 is considerably more delicate than the 3 in a 1923. This coin has a diagonal hit through the 8, but I found nothing about the date which concerned me.

I think the coin was originally a 1923 Peace dollar that was extensively tooled in the date area to give it a 1928 date. It was then polished to hide the tooling and possible plated to give it some "originality". It is too good to be true. Nice looking, key date high dollar coins are not in 3rd party slabs for a reason. They won't slab because of problems ranging from altered surfaces to being outright counterfeit.

I think we have a determination. My son, Mr. "Just Got Back From Taking A Counterfeit Detection Class At ANA" TypeCoin971793, compared the 1928 in question (with the weird lighting) to the photo of my 1925 (with similar weird lighting). He noticed that Liberty's hair buns on both coins are pretty much the same. He tells me that the design of Liberty was modified in later years to add detail, including in the hair bun. So, the 1928 should have extra detail in the hair bun that is lacking in earlier dates. And although the original photo has the weird lighting, being able to compare to another one with similar lighting was a benefit which helped eliminate the problems with that lighting. What he suggests is that a die was made from an early-date Peace dollar, and the date modified to 1928. Coins struck from this die would not have the characteristics of an altered-date coin, such as the 1923-to-1928, but they WOULD have the less-detailed Liberty of the earlier date strikes. This coin may be one of those.

Finally got a response, seller is on vacation and can't take photos. Also filed unpaid item on me and told me he guarantees it's authenticity. He also said he doesn't know if it's been cleaned because he is not a collector. I paid for it as I contacted ebay and they told me I could return it up to 30 days from the day I paid. Will upload photos asap

Easiest way is to pay it to resolve the unpaid bidder strike and then immediately file a SNAD. Use Paypal to pay, if possible, you will be refunded immediately. Send back the coin, make sure you get signature confirmation and tracking. Win. You will have to pay return shipping, but you can escalate that through customer service and usually get refunded for that as well, especially if you say you're going to cancel your account.

coin is finally shipped. sellers response was a 14day MBG from the day I receive the coin. he also stated the surfaces are unaltered to his knowledge and it must be lighting and angle causing me to think its been machine polished. we shall see, ETA Weds delivery.

Seller offered you a 30 day return period from when you paid but just magically now dropped it to a 14 day return period from when you receive it. Changing his rules when you haven't even see the coin? What's up with that? I think the Seller knows it's not a legit coin and is hoping you don't meet his revised timeline for a return. Follow eBays return policy to a "t" and you should be ok. Key date coins on ebay that are not in slabs are not in slabs for a reason.

Waiting to see your pics kdr, but the seller's responses sounded fishy to me. "On vacation", "not a collector" and filing unpaid rather than providing additional pics, not to mention reducing the MBG to 14 days is a bit suspicious.
Good luck with the coin!
