I look through a lot of pennies and it seems to me like the word Liberty and the date on the 1989 doesn't stand out very well ,even a coin in good shape.Anyone else notice this?
Thats probably what it is .The 59-60 penny's date stands up higher and there going on 48 yrs old ,might be the harder material these newer coins are made of.
The obverse and reverse designs have changed many times through the years ,, comparing a 1986 against the 50' and 60's is like apples and oranges ,, the full relief coins of the early years made from copper and the low relief plated coins are entirely different animals .
For some reason most of the cents in the late 80's were really poorly struck. I've noticed many have what looks like a double rim or raised area on the obverse right through the lettering. At first I used to save those thinking I had some kind of valuable Mint error Then I noticed this was a thing on so many in that time line that I eventually dumped them all.
