Hello, I just came across this 1961 D penny and noticed the T in liberty looked a little disfigured. Also, the letters In God we trust look odd. The R looks stretched a little and the S seems mashed. Could someone please help me identify what this is? Thanks!

Liberty looks like it took a hit. The T might be smaller because of grease on the die. That would give the illusion of improper spacing.
Rest in Peace

I agree that Liberty took a hit.

I think that Trust looks odd due to a slightly misaligned die (MAD). The coin may also be the result of an off-center strike but I can't tell without seeing the reverse,

The reverse looks normal. So I only see a very small shift on the obverse. That tiny shift could have caused the letters to be subject to more wear and tear in coin machines.

So you have an ever so slightly misaligned die coin.

If you like it, keep it. If you search coins for errors, you will find a much better MAD coin soon enough, especially if you start searching dimes.

Happy hunting.
