I supposed that is one way to separate yourself from the rest of the country.

I do not think they do. They just circulate among the consumers and merchants.

You know, if they started doing that with coins, Canada could finally have a real "half dollar" like the USA!

@JBUCK: you do realize that only 40% of the Quebec population wants to split? I don't think this topic was meant to be political. But ya go ahead and show off your ignorance.

Lighten up. It was meant as a joke.

Obviously less than 50% want to split since Quebec is still a province.

Educate yourself on the topic first, before you make any "jokes".

Since you have no sense of humour, let me spell it out...

This is a small local group doing this with their money. Perhaps it is their way of "separating" themselves by separating their money.

Get it?

It was not meant to be complicated. It is no secret that a faction in Quebec wants independence. I could have easily made the same joke if a locality in Texas did the same thing.

I am sorry you are apparently sensitive to this, but really, lighten up.

You're in the process of reinforcing a bunch of stereotypes here. Is that your intent?

When I seen this article posted to Facebook by the Saint John Coin Club I ran to C.C.F. to see if this was already posted. Jbuck, I intended to make the exact same joke as you. Coinsarecool, stop it before this thread gets locked. This can become a great discussion on the legality of these bills. We could discuss if this is a form of "Script" since you are getting change in a way that can only be redeemed locally, we could draw parallels to the P.E.I. Holey Dollar, there are many ways you could take this but instead you blow something out of proportion.

On a side note I was a harmonica player in a gospel band in my youth (well, youtheir youth, I am still in my 20s) and I played a few shows up in Northren Quebec, alot of dry Cree reserves. The only reason QUebec stayed apart of Canada is because of the "Ethnic Vote" as they called it. The Native Americans knows not to bite the hand that feeds them so they voted to stay apart of Canada. If it was up to the French Quebecers you would be your own sinking country. Maybe you should educate yourself before you blow something out of proportion.

When I read the article I also assumed that "separation" or "splitting" was the underlying message in cutting the bills in two. If so, it's a sort of creative means to gain publicity regardless of anyone's opinion on the topic of Quebec separatist movements.

Otherwise why would a certain group of people intentionally destroy the value of a banknote? It's probably worth zero cut in half if the other half cannot be found.
