What's up with the Canadian forum the past few days - seems to be like it was a few years ago (and don't think the mods aren't aware and taking it seriously)?

I thought this was a cool story - innovative to say the least. Reminds me a bit of some local bartering currencies that tried to take off in various locales years ago.

Sometimes written text is difficult to gauge.
This was a funny witty joke. No harm done.
Tuff crowd on the forum today.

My Two Cents, I think it's because the federal election has been officially declared. Living in Alberta, our provincial election in May, I can truly say during the weeks preceding it I noticed a distinct element of nastiness in the air - how people drove, how they behaved in lineups, even casual facial expressions tense, not friendly etc. It was almost as if a large percentage of the population thought they were supporting a life or death sporting event at all costs. Unfortunately, that sort of aura in the air hasn't really gone away:-(

As a collector of local currencies I kind of want one. I suppose I could cut a $20 in half but it wouldn't be authentic. Once people from Gaspe relies there is a market for municipal currencies they will start cutting their 20s in half and selling them for $25.

On the general topic of mutilated currency in general, through past experience, older style banknotes with two signatures and the serial number printed twice all on the same side were valid currency as long as one contained:
- both serial numbers and one signature remained OR
- both signatures and one serial number remained.

Meaning 75% of the note was still intact.

But I always wondered how often some scam artist cut away 25% and then constructed a new one with four pieces.

Just folded a 20 in half and had a look at it. One half has 2 signatures and half a serial number, and the other has no signatures and 1 1/2 serial numbers. I'm sure the rules for redeeming mutilated currency have changed with the new series of bills, because by the old rules, neither half would be worth anything.

Regardless, I won't be trying this with my money!

Not planning on trying it either - it's worth only half as much as it used to be fully intact!

If I was so inclined, today's polymer banknotes, I'd bet I'd want to hang on to this half:

"The leaf includes a security feature that, when viewed close to the eye with a single-point light source behind, produces a circular image displaying the note's denomination."

"bad money, drives out good money"....I'm paraphrasing a Latin saying, but if given the choice between two pieces of ripped up $20 vs a whole $20, I'll take the whole note, and spend with YOU, the pieces.

There must be some link to the separation issue ou why not just use a ten note. Frankly it is rather ridiculous to rip a 20 in Half to make a ten. Is there a shortage of ten notes.
Also it shouldn't be a big deal to make a Joke. I think the joke was in referance to people who want to succeed. Not the ones that don't. When fourty %of your population feel that way why take offense to a joke made at there expense. It's a shame the world is getting to politically correct for comedy.

I read the article before seeing it here and didn't think at all about separation. I just assume it's a group of people trying to support their local economy and influence others to do the same.

As a former business owner I would more appreciate support with the whole note I can take to the bank. Until I can pay my bills with half notes that is.

My Two Cents,

How is this possible?

Your government abolished pennies. You will have to round it to

"My five cents"

I know - its not proper rounding - but otherwise it becomes:

"My zero cents."

Which a grumpy member could take to mean, "My zero sense."

Sorry - could not resist.

@Harmonic: It is an interesting development and if it gains steam with the locals, I look forward to seeing how they will deface them further to truly distinguish what they are doing. As it is, its only a bit subversive and doesn't send enough of a message.

It just reiterates what numismatics has taught us: currency will always document society.
