There have been 7 different versions of the LMC designers initials since the first in 1959. Perhaps this has already been discussed but I couldn't find anything in a search. Has anyone ever found a LMC with the wrong designers initials? John1 recently wrote about the 1974 LD, SD possible reversal of the statue base with 2 lines and no lines. The designers initials also changed from a thick font to a thin font and different G in 1974. It was the fourth change according to the Variety Vista Website by Dr John Wiles.

John1. Another question about this occurred to me. Is it even possible for the wrong designer initials to occur on a coin? If so then looking at the transition years would be the first place to look. 67 to 68; 72 to 73; 73 to 74; 85 to 86; 88 to 89: 92 to 93;

I would think that the whole reverse would be wrong not just the FG.

Pete, 1988 is a well known year to have used the wrong reverses for some of the circulation strikes. Theyre listed in the CherryPickers Guide as 1988 FS-901 and 1988-D FS-901. 1989 is also known to have some that have the reverse of 1988.

I have the 88P and 88D RDV-006. I don't think there are any 89 with the 88 reverse. If there is could you post a link please.

John1, Brian Allen is the only expert to recognize the 1989-P reverse of '88 variety, meaning there is no listing number for it. The variety can be found in the book 'Strike It Rich With Pocket Change', but it is certainly disputed as an actual reverse of '88 as it shows none of the markers for the 88 reverse besides a weak, no serif initials. I myself feel it is actually a conveniently located, slightly Grease Filled Die, but still look for and pull them when I find them. They tend to carry a premium of around $1-$10 depending on condition.

Also, the 89 reverse of 88 has only been reported on the philadelphia minted cents.

A lot of people say the reverse of 88 on a 89 is actually just vlds. There are for sure 88's with the reverse of 89. I think there are other changes besides the font of designer initials but that's the easiest way to recognize it.

I have one CPA, and I saw one just like it posted on another site. He sent his in and they called it Vlds/ abraided die. It seems I'm often in the minority(hopefully that will turn around), but I agree with Koinpro on this one. There's no evidence of grease and it's just too neat to be abraided on those tiny little initials.
