An interesting 1953 P LWC with a trough on the rim of most of the top half of the obverse of the coin. The second photo shows a faint crack or trough as well confined to the top of the rim on the reverse. The next photos show magnified views of several points of the obverse around the rim. Note the 1st T in STATES looks like a longhorn steer or a devil T. The last 2 photos show an interesting 3 in the date and the I in EPU looks like a 1. I found this in a Whitman coin folder that I bought from a friend. Thoughts welcome!!

Well, let's make a list:

1) off-set strike
2? split rim visible on reverse
3) doubling of the 3
4) ongoing erosion of rim (from counting machines?)
5) extrusion marks away from center, 12:00 obv., re: off-set strike?

What else?

Thanks CPA and BC. I have added another closeup photo of the date. It looks like the right side of the coin was pushed outward leaving a depression close to the coin and then a ridge to the right of that. Also looks like the mint tried to polish out the anomoly. See the die scratches to the right of the coin and were more successful near the top of the 3 than the bottom. That would seem to indicate it isn't a post mint condition but rather occurred in the production of the coin.? The also appears to be a small die crack kind of like an s in the upper loop of the 3.

The dies were over work past normal retirement in the 1950's wheat cents.

Thanks COOP. No doubt on the 3 now. I think I'll keep the coin anyway as I can see the rim strike offset with my unclothed eye.
