Thanks for the info, shadz. After I posted that, I did some reading and found out about the low mintage for most coins in 2009. I checked what I've collected so far (which is a tiny, tiny amount.) Sure enough, I don't have any 2009 in any denominatilon.

So how does one go about getting "boxes" of pennies?

IF you are lucky you can get your bank to order you a box. You might have to get rid of the ones you don't keep at a Coinstar, but the box is only $25 and @17 pounds.

Now it might take you checking several banks, but be sure to let them know you will NOT be bringing the coins back. The back SHOULD be able to order an extra box to come in with their regular delivery. IF no bank will order you a box (some only do it for business account holders, while others may do it for personal account holders) you may still be able to get lucky with CWRs Customer Wrapped Rolls.

the CWRs could have things better than 2009 pennies in it. You would need to check the threads in the Coin Roll Hunting sub forum to see all the things possible to find that customers of a bank come in to deposit, but it could basically be anything from a 2009 to Flying Eagle, to a Canadian or Trinadad and Tobago penny!

for boxes they go like this:
$1000 small dollar coins (40 rolls of 25)
$500 halves or quarters (50 rolls)
$250 dimes (50 rolls)
$100 nickels (50 rolls)
$25 pennies (50 rolls)

Sometimes CWR can be better than a box, because you could end up with a box of bright and shiny 2015 pennies and that wont help you get your 2009s.

I think I'd have more fun looking through CWRs. Hopefully I can get some from my credit union.

As for paying a fee for using Coinstar, it's fine. Gotta pay to play, right?

IF you are lucky, your coinstar might offer free e-gift certificates to places like Amazon, or Best Buy, Lowes Hardware or Home Depot.. you can check on Coinstar website which offers it has near you with a zip code search of their kiosks. This means you might be able to get the leftovers counted for free and not have to just cash in the coins with the 10.8% fee.

Also consider Littleton probably has the majority of them since they have sets they give with just about everything a first time buyer from them can get in one of their newspaper ads

I bought a package of 160 years of pennies from Littleton coins which came with a 1943 steel, nice coin, an Indian head of the highest mintage, but a nice coin, and a bunch of the the Lincoln bicentennial. Not to bad over all. They then sent me a package of coins that was so overpriced I sent the coins back and told them not to send me any more.

I have been thinking about picking up an extra 2009 mint set. I like the satin finish.
I do not keep any of the ones I find in circulation but rarely do I ever see one in the wild.
