I am in a bit of quandary of where to post this, so moderator please move if deemed necessary. I have never seen any toning such as this and would love everyone's opinion, and also if there is any value to it. Secondly, do any of the TPG's grade proof sets? None of the other coins in the set, i.e. dollars, quarters, etc., show any sign of toning. Please let me know your thoughts. I also apologize for the number of photos, but to see the degree of toning I thought it necessary. The silver toning is exactly as it appears, and it took a bunch of photos to capture it. Thanks...

I do believe there are people on ebay who'd be very interested in this toning. TPG's DO grade proofs. As to value, thats for you to determine, I personally believe that the log cabin one has the most potential.

IMO they were poorly stored leading to the toning.

If I were you I would keep them in the same place and storage conditions as you have since 2009.

The colorful toning is a big plus valuewise to the right people as compared to the usual hazing that detracts from the value of modern proof coins.

That is toning that some people hate, and some love.

Count me as one who loves it. I've seen this silver toning on Lincolns from time to time, and that these are the special 2009 issues is a plus. If I found this on ebay I'd be after it.
Rest in Peace

I find the toning on that set really nice with great eye appeal . Could be a micro hole in the holder . Don't fret , it's a potential money bag if you can keep it that way .

This is a common occurrence with this issue. Some of mine have, some not. All have been stored the same way. Probably a fluid of some type at the wrong ratio at times during the process.

The toning occured because of the coins' reactions to their storage conditions.

I like it.

I remember reading back in 2009 that the mint had some trouble getting the Lincoln cents in the proof sets to come out right. I seem to recall it was because of the 95% copper alloy they used to make these coins. I guess they forgot how to make them after 27 years...

I am not a fan of toning, but I love the look of these coins, especially the silver color. I am going to have to pull out my 2009 proof set and see what it looks like.

I definitely like the looks of those!

Have you owned these the whole time? If so, I agree with jack jeckel to keep them in the same conditions. If these were a recent purchase, I would store them in a dark, climate-controlled environment to sustain the current look.

If you're thinking of selling, I'd wait. I can only see the value going up.

TPG's do grade proof coins but, as far as I know, not proof sets altogether. Each coin would have to be separate and loose of the holder.

I have a year's worth of presidential proofs that were graded as a set and put into a super-slab (NGC), so maybe they will do groupings. I would be a shame to break up that collection. Then again, I'm a 2009 collector and Lincoln freak so I'm a little biased.

Just a little background.....I purchased the set through an online auction (not ebay) and the set came from Ohio. I have no knowledge of the background or storage of the set.

Mine toned like that also. It's a not uncommon issue with that particular set; mine were stored in a zip lock bag with a desiccant packet inside and then stored in a climate controlled environment and they still toned similarly to yours. So I would agree with oober and Perfessor that this toning is a result of something at the mint most likely.

The 2009 Proof and Mint Set Lincolns used the original 95% copper alloy, not copper-plated zinc. The lens insert is apparently the primary culprit for the toning of these cents.
