When I was half roll searching, I told them I was disabled and wanted to try to put together a half collection from circulation. The (smalltown) people got behind me and were rooting for me in the quest. I took the album in at times to let them see the progress.
I asked them about Ikes. The head teller did everything she could and finally told me it was no good, they just had no ability to order them. Given the friendships that developed, I fully believed what she said to me (don't roll search anymore and still in contact!). So it may be legit what they are telling you about not being able to order them.

On page six of this thread I posted about the first proof Ike I had ever seen and also that I remembered opening up the silver 3 coin Bicentennial sets and admiring the glory of the Ike, JFK,and Washington Mr. Click asked for pics. I finally got to the safe deposit and got them today! Sorry for the less than good pics. I need to work on photographing coins. My grandfather used to order these and have them sent to my house instead of his so I could see them first. Here are the 5 sets with OGP. Note the broken and badly worn case below the open set from a little boy named ME looking at the set so much. Here is the proof 1973 proof set closer (with very bad lighting): And here are closeups (abused/scratched case and all) of the very first proof Ike I ever saw - closeups from the last pic. Here are pics of the 76 sets. These were the first silver Ike proofs I had ever seen. I still remember opening while with my Grandfather. Good memories.

The best part about the price of a good number of clad Proof sets is that people don't really collect them much so they are not expensive. My local shop sells them for fairly cheap and has boxes of them. So go for it - a proof Ike - silver or not - is an amazing coin in hand. I just wish they had kept making them for 30 or more years :( BTW - original price for each of the 1973 sets was 9.00 - the web says currently the equivalent of 30.00+ in modern dollar value! The silver three piece set was 12.00 back in '76 or 39.00+ in modern money. Even these are only selling 14.00-20.00 nowadays on ebay.

@jbuck - glad you liked them. I still cannot figure out the funky mottled effect in the pic of the Ike in the Bicentennial set picture. Its "perfect" in hand.
Thanks for the reminder also - not as much online as of late - a minute here and there - so I forgot :(

Yes, it is interesting. Maybe it is a late die state, making the mirrored field a little uneven where only the camera can see and exaggerate it. My 2009 Lincoln C&C silver commemorative dollar has a similar look if you look at it just right, but otherwise it looks perfect.

It almost makes the piece look like one of those shiny plastic toy coins.
