Well... this one is medieval but still from Germany, more precisely from the margraviate of Brandenburg. This braceteate has been minted under Otto II. between 1184 and 1205.

why were the justiermarks applied? who in the mint office was responsible? Thank you very much! These coins were struck in Stuttgart to a nominal weight of 3,898 g. This is probably where adjustment to the official weight was done. This example seems to have been heavier than the norm, thus the relatively extensive adjustment marks.

Thanks for the explanation, GERMANICUS ! so your coin has the correct weight? Last year I purchased a very rare coin, strike quite weak in the portrait, with similar "damage" on both sides The auctioneer commented "justeersporen" (Dutch for Adjustment marks). This is a Leicester daalder from the province of Overijssel, near the present border between Holland and Germany. In 1595 this area was very much in the German influence, so I smuggle the coin in this thread . Leicester rijksdaalder 1595 Overijssel R3

Hello again, I think I know what "German State" coin means now. I apologize for my earlier post with the wrong coins. Definitely shined the light on my newbie collector status. I am posting this modern German state coin. LuckyCuss posted the 1919 Stadt Trier 25 pfennig. There are varieties of this coin. Small date with small lettering and large date, large lettering. Also, the building on the right could touch the rim or not. If the building does not touch the rim, it has an extra window. This coin is the small date, extra window variety. 1919 Stadt Trier 10 pfennig Composition:Iron Weight: 3.4g Diameter:20.1mm Thickness: 2mm

Purists may not regard this later sort of coinage born of the exigencies of war and economic dislocation as truly representative of the German state coin genre, but they are certainly in any case a very interesting subset. Since Trier has been brought up again, here's a 10 pfennig made of zinc that while undated is considered to have been issued in 1918 - A very similar octagonal shaped specie of the same size (just over 20 mm across), denomination, and composition also came into use the year before in Stadt Alzey - Besides being made of easily corroded zinc, these are rather thin and flimsy as well, so it's atypical to find them in such nice shape even though they didn't circulate for very long.

Came across this today in an unsorted older collection. 1773 Free Imperial City of Frankfurt 1 kreuzer (equivalent to four pfennig). Billon in composition, a one year type. The detail incorporated into the depiction of the city is amazing given the coin's diminutive size (not quite 15 mm in diameter).
