I would really appreciate if someone could offer their opinion on this one - I've been offered this Barber quarter 1911-D, that looks too good to be true. I've looked online to check for counterfit and fake signs but couldn't find anything really helpful. I didn't get the chance to measure the weight yet unfortunately. What do you think - real or fake?

I see vertical lines on the neck.
I suspect abrasive cleaning.

Looks legit, but cleaned. I still see some luster, but not a lot.

Looks good but cleaned. Was probably very close to uncirculated, but looks to be in the AU-55 range from the bit of slide on the tips of the eagles outermost wing feathers.

One thing I would note is that your hand, which is holding the coin has natural oils that will do damage to the coin. In fact, I can practically see the palm print forming.

I would recommend that if you must hold a coin it is best to do so only on the edges. Even better, especially with truly valuable coins, is to use a glove that allows you to grasp something small like a coin.

I agree about the abrasion lines on the neck. On the back you can still see a few flecks of the toning this coin used to have.

Not a bad coin actually. Hard to tell what is on the neck.
From the picture - all I see are fingerprints.

I very well may be 100% wrong - but without the
coin in hand, its very hard to tell.

The old toning is still clinging to the rims. What
ever they used removed more than gunk. Its striped away
luster as well. If Acetone was used, we wouldn't be
having this conversation.

If submitted to a TPG, it'd come back either
Altered Surfaces or Cleaned AU Details. The 11-D
is deemed to be a semi key date and in that condition
I'd venture a $500 value.

Buy a raw book and stick it in there for a dozen
years or so.

@elbesaar

Thanks so much for your in depth analysys. I grabbed the coin for US$150 and it will go in the folder with other Barber quarters.

Give it a quick 30 minute acetone dip first.
