I just got my package this week from ICCS, almost 150 coins. I hate, and I mean _HATE_ how they package the coins in plastic sheets now, sometimes 2-3 coins per slot, instead of packing them in the boxes like they used to...

That is very annoying especially with dollars. The box idea was much better. OT glad to see you still have faith in the Yonge Street Coffee shop boys as well!

@skip79 did you make it? I asked a number of people there, including everyone that went to the after-seminar dinner, if they were a member here.
I enjoyed it. It's hard to get too much in such a short period of time and would have been nice to be able to show some of my own and go through the process (there just wasn't time), but it was definitely worth the trip. I heard mixed reviews from others. Susan Maltby was interesting too.

Any great points or trade secrets that you learned from the seminar.

Chequer: Yup, I was there, but I wasn't at the dinner. I was disappointed with the coin grading session. It was (in my view) a busy make-work project of evaluating their sample coins throughout the entire session. No grading standards, tips or pointers were offered, other than a series of hand-outs which were not discussed, nor was there any analysis of the group's efforts after the grading exercise. Just a bunch of hand-outs, and an assembly line of their sample coins to inspect and grade for the entire duration. I was certainly hoping & expecting to get something of unique value out of the session, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. In flipping through their hand-outs the next day, I got some insight into their methodology on a case by case scenario of the sample coins we had looked at. Problem with that: each coin's case study provided a detailed narrative, but no photos of the very coins we looked at for comparative purposes. It certainly was not an engaging session. The second session on coin preservation was interesting, but quite broad in terms of conservatory processes of all types of collectibles and artifacts; but the facilitator did try to circle back the emphasis on numismatics whenever possible/appropriate.
When I registered for the full day workshop, I wanted & expected to yield more value out of the coin grading session than from the numismatic preservation session, yet, by the end of the day, the opposite proved true. I'm not sure if the same course offered in prior years was facilitated the same way (by both presenters), but when evaluating value for $ spent on the course, I wouldn't recommend this course if delivered in the same format as we had on Saturday. For the organizers/RCNA: I'd recommend splitting up the topics as 2 separate courses, and expanding the scope, format, and engagement of the coin grading session.

Like I said, I felt the delivery of the course worked well for me, but it certainly would not work for everyone. I said it should be a two-day course, with a day for each topic, which still would not likely be enough. I do feel the photos of the coins should be in the book though because that would make the reference a lot more valuable. There's no question I learned quite a bit, but I'd always like to learn more. It would be interesting to know how the course developed since its inception in 1998.
Sorry I didn't get the chance to meet you ... where were you seated? I was in the last chair on the far side of the room by the one female that attended.

Well, if you were seated to her left, then I sat right beside you (for the 1st session).

A couple years ago, Francois Rufiange (with my help) set up a grading workshop for Canadian decimal coins at the Coin Expo. It involved lots of coins, with batches of one year, but at least six different grades per batch (e.g., 8 1943 Tombac 5c of varying grades). Lots of discussion and comments on elements such as strike strength and mint state grading. I know some CCF members took that workshop (Devlec for sure).
Feedback from that workshop was excellent (that I know of). Maybe I should encourage Jared Stapleton to run it again at a future Coin Expo, anyone else who took the grading workshop at Coin Expo have any feedback?

@chequer: Yes, indeed! And it was nice chatting with you. @SPP: Now that sounds interesting. From your recollection, was the workshop intended for beginner, intermediate, or advanced "graders"? Did it focus on coins exclusively, or was paper money grading included? I'd certainly welcome more info about this workshop if offered again at a future Coin Expo weekend.
