I have a 1988 penny with an odd mark on the left of it. The mark is a raised bump that runs from "Liberty" to "In" and clearly the bump was there before the lettering was added.

I'm very new to collecting and have purchased a reference guide, however I'm having a hard time discerning what this is. I've seen images online of gas bubbles and die cracks and I can't tell.

Thank you. Also if you already saw this, I apologize. I tried to post this in the correct forum but accidentally placed it in the grading forum first time around.

looks to be a large plating bubble. It definately isn't a die crack . I dont have any photographs on hand for reference but a die crack would be more jagged and thinner. That is rounded and raised like a plating bubble. Not really a premium coin but cool find none the less it is still an error. I was going to say Die Deterioration because usually you will se it in that area of a coin along the rim but the fact it is raised and I see no die flow lines anywhere on the coin I'm going with plating bubble.

Edit : and to the forum

to CCF. Could be Die Deterioration, aka worn die. Press the "bubble" with a toothpick if it dents it was a gas bubble. If it does not dent it is worn die.

I agree with the worn/over-polished die. Common for the mid to late 80s. That's a pretty significant specimen.

Note on the "IN" how the overall shape of these devices are altered. You will see the center of these devices are thinner than the outside/inside edge of these devices. As mention it is common to see this from cents in the 80's but it still appears on current cents also, but not as strong.
