I understand a simple punch, but how did they completely change the reverse?  |

Same way they mint them, with two punches, probably in a vise or something similar.

Both of those coins are pretty cool. A lot of times we'll see a one-sided punch that leaves a divot, but this is pretty neat. Agreed with jbuck... vise or hammer job with two dies.

Back a few years ago on ebay someone was selling a complete set of Jefferson nickels he modified in a similar manner. He had a hand press with an upper and lower die that he inserted the nickel between. I do not remember the exact message on the nickel - but it was something political for a a presidential candidate I think (Romney?). He wanted 1000.00 but I don't think it sold. 2008 was last year for memorial reverse. In 2009 there were 4 different reverse designs.

Reverse is normal for that year, except for counterstamp of course.

I read it the same way Tunnioc did. OP wasn't familiar with the 2009 reverse. Not a lot of them circulating, new collector might not have seen one in change.
