I have this 1893-S Morgan silver dollar. I would like to know if you see any authenticity issues and to determine if I should get this coin graded. If so, what grade do you think it is and do you think it has been cleaned? All opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help..

That sucker has been cleaned without a doubt I can tell you that. Wait for more responses to see if it is legit since it is the key to the series....Nothing is screaming fake to me, just harshly cleaned...F+/Low VF details.

The coin looks correct to be genuine as the date looks correct with the raised 3. I would grade the coins at VF 20/25. Check the LIBERTY area to confirm the die markings. There is a set of rabbit ears in the first leg (at the bottom of the leg) of the R and a slant line in the top of the T. If the coin has the die marking, you should send it in for grading. There is always a chance it could get a details grade. Here is a photo for your use on the die markings.

If you have it in hand the rabbit ears should be visable.

I don't see anything that screams fake to me. It it has been cleaned it was done a while ago. Grade wise, I'd give it a fine to very fine details. Even with the current problems it is still worth some pretty good money IF it's the real deal.

The coin is in some need of conservation to remove the distracting carbon spotting on the reverse at the top. There also appears to be a rim ding/flat spot visible on the reverse, at the 6 o'clock position. Either the spotting left "unconserved", or the rim ding, will get the coin a details grade.

If it were mine, I'd send it in to ANACS for a quick TPG that won't cost you an arm and a leg. At least you'll know whether it's the real deal and won't have to spend a small fortune and wait months to find out. Once you find out whether it's the real deal you can then decide whether you want to put more money in it and get it conserved or not.

Good luck!

Nothing screams fake to me. VF details, cleaned. Nice example of a rarity.

Clearly cleaned at some point very clumsily, leaving obverse hairlines and inconsistent wiping between the stars.

What's the verdict on the rabbit ears, rum-n-cola?

I'm cautiously optimistic that you have a genuine coin but it must be authenticated by a major TPG (PCGS, NGC, or ANACS). It does appear to be cleaned with Fine Details and, even so, would easily be worth $2,000 once authenticated.

Rum N Cola,

Can you update on this coin? Did you check for the rabbit ears?
