Yeah, I think I've seen some like that. I assumed it was just damaged. I've never seen it on an uncircukated nickel....

The missing details of the upper railing in the last image are due to die polishing, The distortion of the bottoms of E PL is from incomplete filling of the letters due to strike. (bifurcated letters, fairly common on early US coins especially the open collar coins but it does happen with later issues as well.)
