Hi, I've come across this 1878 S Morgan dollar which seems to have an abnormal mintmark. I don't see a VAM in the CherryPickers Guide that relates to something like this, so I'm wondering what it could be.

Thanks in advance.

First off, all Morgan dollars dies and die pairings are assigned a VAM number. Next attributing an 1878-S B2 reverse (which yours is) begins with the 4th star on the right and the "r" in Trust, see the attached link http://www.vamworld.com/1878-S+...43;Varieties

Hard to tell for sure, but the MM appears to have taken a hit.

some pictures of area between eagle's right wing and leg would help identify the VAM.
