Normally I cap my coin purchases at about $200. But I've always wanted a gold Double Eagle. A few weeks ago for my 63rd birthday I finally pulled the trigger...   Very scary "investing" so much money. Edited by CO Collector

1833 capped bust dime paid 200$ for it and some Seated quarters and dimes, ended up finding a 1874 carson city quarter in with it too.  |

Have you checked out some of the Liberty Head Double Eagles with very low mintage that Red Book lists for a few hundred dollars more than coins with mintage near 1 million? I see 1902 with mintage of just 31,140 for same price as 1904 with mintage of 6.5 million. What is wrong with this picture? I see 1892 with mintage of 4430 and price in VF condition of $2250. Is there something I don't understand. That price is only $400 more than same coin (1904) with mintage of 6.5 million in VF. Is this some fantasy? |

I don't know, but I think there just isn't a lot of demand for them except as bullion. That's why there is such little difference in price between grades. For example, a 1900 is listed as $1,625 in VF-20 and $1,950 in MS-63. Edited by Numisma
