Have you checked out some of the Liberty Head Double Eagles with very low mintage that Red Book lists for a few hundred dollars more than coins with mintage near 1 million? I see 1902 with mintage of just 31,140 for same price as 1904 with mintage of 6.5 million. What is wrong with this picture? I see 1892 with mintage of 4430 and price in VF condition of $2250. Is there something I don't understand. That price is only $400 more than same coin (1904) with mintage of 6.5 million in VF. Is this some fantasy?

The difference is in the higher grades.

MS63 1892 is $42,000. MS63 1902 is $14,000. MS63 1904 is only $1,950.

But I agree that there should be a greater numismatic premium for the lower-grade low mintage gold coins... especially since there are dang few available!

I just searched ebay: There are only THREE VF-grade $20 gold Liberty Head coins (out of 375 total). None of the three are low mintage.

Bump!
It seems like a month ago I bought my Capped Bust half dollar for $100, but actually it was just 5 days ago

ALREADY outdid that one, purchased my new most expensive coin a couple of hours ago for $150!

1897 NGC PF-61 Liberty Head Nickel

1913-S Type 2 Buffalo nickel. Dropped 77 bucks on it. Will likely be a long while before I delve in to the more pricey coins. There is a good chance, however, that I will be surpassing that 77 dollar mark in completing the Liberty nickel set I am currently working on.

My current most expensive purchase is my Edward III groat (fourpence) struck 1354-55 at London. I paid $325 for it. I hope to outdo that with a proof seated half soon, though.

I personally have been collecting coins all my life. But I was never serious about it until this year (I'm 15 right now). I usually don't purchase coins considering most of mine are either gifts and inheritance from some of my relatives. Most of the coins I've gotten I've found from being an addicted roll hunter. My most expensive coin would be a Soaring Eagle Penny I just purchased off of ebay. I haven't gotten it yet so I can't show y'all a picture of it but boy I'm excited for it to get here.

My most expensive was a tie a $5 Gold 1902 S Liberty and an 1837 Half Dime in AU condition. Paid $280 for each. The Half Dime may have been an overpay, but the gold was an underpay.

Actually, here's the obverse of it. This was the only image I could save from ebay. It's not the greatest penny in the world but I love it.

Probably this.. it's hard to see from the pictures but it has a real nice strike (rare for this year) and good luster.

I've been tempted to try and convert it to PCGS (right now it's an ANACS MS-62) but I'm afraid it might be a slider and come back AU instead of MS.

1909 S VDB in BU 1922 No D in XF and 1914-D in AU ....

All uncertified and for the life of me I can't remember what I paid but the 1922 No D was around $375 way back when and the 09S VDB was under a grand by the time I bought ..... It was slightly more than an 09S VDB and I elected to buy the No D at the time as it was a really nice XF Dye 2 Full Strike reverse with a really nice obverse as well, killer coin I love it but have it locked up in Safety Box more than I get to look at it .....

The 14-D was an ebay auction coin and I do remember buying for under $600 at the time .... Coin may have an old cleaning as well but details are super sharp and retone is nice and it displays nicely in the folder ....

Some of my type coins, especially the Trade dollar and old large cents were pricey but again I don't remember and really don't want to dig through my receipts to to find!

Make that three of us!

That's a very nice FEC. I got a 57 very similar to that when I started collecting about 8 years ago. Keep it up!
