I have my list. At coins shows I typically look around for who has what. I look for what catches my eye, noting where it was and how much it costs. Depending on what I see and how much I have, I go back and make the purchase(s). However, I have learned that is something really, really appeals to me I need to go ahead an get it.

Since my Lincoln collect is "complete" I buy whatever appeals to me. It may or may not even be an upgrade.

What is that other collection if you don't mind?

Joking, but from your signature pic I am guessing it involves Pac Man or Mrs. Pac Man. That one coin looks like it is ready to eat those three dots.

I have one of those.
How-Do-You-Decide-What-Coin-To-Buy-Next.

To answer the original question. I have an idea of what I want, but if something pops up that interests me I go for it. I have A.D.D. when it comes to coins and currency I want them all and shiny things excite me.

I try to keep in my head a reasonable amount of "open" things, then purchase within them.

Like I currently have 7070 type open, uncirculated wheat open, barber half open and classic silver commemorative open. So if something comes up in one of those 4...I do it if I have the money at the time.

I try not to look at anything else, lol, because I will buy it and then suddenly have a 5th thing open!

Sometimes, I sleep on it, wake up knowing which I want to buy.

That did not work today.

I think I will have to look at the Lincoln again, to see if it is something I want.

And I am sure I will want to look at the dimes, when they come in on
Friday, to see what quality they are.

Sounds like a lot of collectors have the same problems, from time to time.

And I see others have more sets going, than needed.

In fact a order just went out to Wizard. I now have two commemorative
Dollar albums coming and a classic commemorative type album.

A coule months ago I decided to just get albums for all the sets
I want to do, so when a coin comes along, I will have a place
to put it.

I hope that works out.

And sometimes it's 20 minutes after a big mint release and you think "oh crap" and run to the computer

For me it's an impulse thing along with 'let me check my needs list'.

In other words when I'm at a coin show or my LCS I always have my phone with me and that means I always have my website handy to discover what dates/mint marks I need for any of the series I collect. So for me the two go hand in hand. I'm an impulse buyer providing I like the coin and 'need' the coin....

Cascade ... That is exactly what happened to me on that LBJ set.

I even asked my coworkers to remind me.

There is always to much to buy ... For me

I Think I know our problem. how many coin collectors do you know that just collect one type of coin ? how about NONE !
We all want to collect anything and everything that appeals to us. So we buy a little of this, a little that. so that's what we call ; "How We Decide What Coin TO Buy Next "

For me it is all fairly easy. I am trying to fill certain Albums and/or improve the ones I already have. I go to lots of coin shows and get to know dealers. I ask them to find me certain coins. For example I now need only 3 FSB Mercury dimes and a dealer emailed me that he will have one of them for me at the next show.

1. I notice I have $15 laying around
2. I search ebay for about 4 hours
3. I find about 20 nice coins
4. I select the best one
5. I regret my decision to buy that one
6. I receive the coin and end up not regreting my decision
Rest in Peace

Since I do most of my shopping offline, I go into a LCS and see if any of the coins speak to me and are up to my quality standards. If they are and if the price is reasonable I make the purchase.
