1979-D Susan B Anthony Dollar / SBA Clip Error & Inverted Copper Nickel Edge?

picc Valued Member United States 74 Posts	Posted 10/27/2015 8:07 pm I picked up this coin which looked like a normal minor planchet clip error at first but if you look at the top left of the reverse picture which shows the edge surrounding the coin, the copper color and the nickel color are opposite than the rest of the edge. Like they somehow got flipped from the clip which doesn't make any sense. Any thoughts on what this is or how it could happen. Thanks Report this Post to the Staff

Could it actually be called a clip or ? Also the revers cladding is only where it is Clipped/knicked so I'm sure that has something to do with it but I don't know what . Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 10/27/2015 10:22 pm That reversal of the cladding layers is exactly what you should see on a clad coin with a clip. Twhen the blank is punched from the strip it results in "smearing" of the clad layers on the edge of the blank and the edge of the hole. This smearing will be in opposite directions. On the edge of the hole the top clad layer will be smeared downward and on the blank the bottom layer will be smeared upward. Now when the next blank is punched out overlapping the hole from the previous punch creating a clipped blank, the edge of the blank will be smear upward as on the previous one. But in the clip area the smearing will be downward as seen in the original hole. The OP's coin looks like it had a very tiny edge clip. Large enough to cause the rim weakness, but so small that the planchet expanded enough to make contact with the reeded collar so the reeds show but weaker than normal. Report this Post to the Staff
